Sleep time battle, does that sound familiar to you? All parents and caretakers can relate to the struggle of getting their baby to sleep peacefully. As we all know adequate sleep is required for healthy mind and body and research shows that a lack of sleep not only impacts mood or behavior but also learning and memory. How true is this, I have heard parents complaining that as less as 60 minutes miss also appears to be huge miss. And the consequence is an overtired hyper active child. Unlike us adults who gets sluggish as we get tired. It is therefore vital to give an ideal sleep environment along-with a consistent bedtime to help him drift into sleep peacefully and sleep longer. some of the ideas in this blog will help you that bedtime a breeze for you and for your little one.Of course, A mother knows her child better than anyone else, and you may need to adapt to the suggestions as per your situation. 1. De clutter, No distractions please! : Cluttered room overwhelms the child and prevents them from slowing down for sleep. Don’t leave toys lying near their sleeping area because as soon as you leave the room they might start playing with it. It is therefore a good idea to organize those dolls, cars, Lego blocks ,books etc in a designated storage space, be in the form of shelves, cabinets or storage bins (for storage when you are in hurry) which can help them to calm down. Huge room or a small one, there is always a storage solution. For instance an under bed storage easily accessible to your child would be a perfect toy storage solution for a small and cozy room.
2. Light levels :Bright lights inhibit production of melatonin (the sleepy hormone). So makes it hard for the kid to sleep smoothly. One hr before bedtime using warm less bright light instead of flour scent light in the living room and bedroom area will help to soothe and slow them down. With the small babies as you need to feed them in the night you can use small less bright light, this also can help for some of the older kids who are afraid of sleeping in the darkness .one can use dimmer with the lights to set the low light levels before sleep and which also allows cozy reading time with your little one easy and accessible. As we all know using any kind of screen before sleep can distract kids and also give them hard time to sleep. For an infant even keeping screen in the room may hamper their sleep because these screens emits lots of blue light and can give them a lot of stimulation.
3. Block the outside light: Blackout curtains or any thick curtains can come to your rescue for achieving that early bedtime for an infant or pre-schooler especially during summers. These can also be used if you have a bright street overlooking your babies’ bedroom or afternoon naps are becoming difficult. Avoid using sheer curtains in baby or kids room.
4. Magic of Colors: Colors is a huge subject in itself. Different colors invoke different feelings and have different purpose. It can make you feel sad, glad, inspired and what not. For instance Reds are for eating areas and their overuse in bedroom can disrupt sleep. Want to go bright without disrupting your child’s sleep, light tones of Orange or Yellow might be for you. If you haveenough light in the bedroom during the day than you can then think of darker colors for that great night sleep.
5.The temperature matters! : Did you have a night-time waking? Temperature might be to blame. Having the right cooling/heating system determines how easily your child will drift into sleep and stay there. Studies have proven that establishing and maintain just the right temperature helps attain good night sleep for everyone, more so for children.
All the above factors were related to the physical space .But setting that emotional space is equally important to prepare them for sleep.
